Hey all,
Soooo as I haven't seen most of you in a bit and will be out of town for most of the next two months.... I'll used this as a sufficient method of communication.
1) Flaming Lips- Sorry for those who do appreciate them. Or who think that they are OVER rated.... deal. I just recently started noticing and loving the completeness of their albums. Many a morning on the way to work I would bob my head to Yoshimi and her crime fighting ways.
2) Stumped about this criteria. Then MJ died. I saw it as a sign. Is it too soon to be talking about this? In all seriousness I loooovvvvve the MJ disco days. Rock with you video? Priceless. Burn this disco out? Total roller skating party rock out.
3) I don't enjoy running. It makes me angry. I typically only run when I'm upset at something or someone. Enter Bloc Party. These guys get my ass in gear. Uphill? No problem. Stuck at a traffic light? I'm running through it anyway. (Just kidding- everyone please try to obey all street signs and traffic patterns while running- safety first)
4) I was torn between Usher and Mase. Not particularly wooooing over either of them (as I was in my 311 phase at the time) I do remember the ladies going nuts over abs, rolexes, benzos, etc.... so how did I break the tie? By remembering that the My Way music video is Usher as a clown in a junkyard. Pretty ridiculous when you actually listen to the lyrics. And ridiculousness wins points in my book.
5) Sorry that this criteria was such a pain in the ass for everyone. Mmmmm wait. No I'm not. Sure theres not TONS of all female bands.... but they exist. Dig people dig. Be Good Tanyas are a fun little Canadian trio who make me happy. Very much reminds me of friends in upstate around a campfire struming guitars and mandolins. Which now makes me very excited for this weekend.
6) Vivid memories of Batman. Vivid memory of driving with my brother and dad to get ice cream when this song was on the radio. Vivid memory of all of us botching the lyrics in big chorus belting ways. Still have not managed to learn them. Almost like I don't want to botch up the memory by ceasing to botch up the lyrics? Ahhh nostalgia.
7) Put this on here for Ira. Also this is my attempt to be cool by putting Wu-Tang on a mix cd. (Note to all white girls who do not know Wu-Tang: REDMAN IS NOT IN WU-TANG)
8) Location: Movie Theater in Leuven, Belgium.
Movie: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
Condition: Brain slightly altered by booze.
Result: Total awe. Goosebumps. Thinking this is what soundtracks are all about.
9) Torn between having this song as either the non native language.... or cover better than original. Still torn. I am fascinated how Nouvelle Vague is able to take any song, get it funky Bossa Nova style, and maintain the integrity of the original. Anytime I turn on this album I feel the instant urge to make a cool mixed drink involving Gin, an international magazine of sorts, and sitting outside under a ceiling fan. Typically..... only the the Gin thing happens... sigh.
10) I like The Who. I was shocked when my dad said he just didn't get them. Growing up we always had Beatles, Stones, etc..... so I just naturally thought he was down with the other Brits who played rock. (Yes. I know. Dumb. Ira, or someone else who knows more than me about this subject, is more than welcome to explain the intricacies of each and why my assumptions are absurd.)
11) Streeeeeeeeeeetch. Sorry. I really didn't want to have to buy another song. So weren't with a song I just wanted on a mix. Got lazy. Let you all down. HOWEVER..... this song is not the original. A nice remix I have on my iTunes. Does this make up for my laziness? You bet your ass it does.
12) I spent the majority of my first semester in Leuven... in our communal kitchen. (Note there are very few pics of me during this time due to the FACT that my face absorbed all 15 extra pounds incurred during my kitchen sit in) Where was I? Oh yes. The kitchen. It had a radio. Sooo I spent alot of time listening to Belgian music... with of course some NPR sprinkled in there at 8:30 pm everynight. Honestly they did not play that much "Belgian" stuff. Mostly US/UK imports. However...... Anouk. Ohhhh the anthem of our year. Nothing like belting out "I need you, you, you" to your best friends on the table of a bar at 4am. Ooo another bout of nostalgia. Sorry. It will pass.
13) Having the last name O'Connor in elementary school typically brought up- Like Sinead O'Connor??? Yes. Exactly like the bald Irish singer with a beautiful voice. Exactly. (In college it switched to either Flannery or Sandra Day.... NERDS!) I had no idea this was a cover. I really can't imagine anyone else being able to pull this song off. Ohhhh heartache. Ohhh dinner in a fancy restaurant. Only thing that bothers me? Title spelling- 2 U..... really?
14) Last week was the 40th anniversary of Woodstock. For the hippy haters who just don't get... scram. Sometimes I get really really confused as to why I did not grow up in the 60's. Like ummm God... did you forget about me? Leave me on the bench too long? 'Put me in coach, I'm ready to play, today'... I recently watched the DVD of Woodstock and this song was in it. Not in the concert part, but in the part where all of these people are coming together to build the stage, to set up the tarps and amps, to share food and drugs and laughs. Can't be nostalgic on this one... just pissed I missed it.
15) I love Paul Simon. I love Obvious Child. I think its a great way to end a CD, triumphant drumming and merriment.
Annnd I'll leave it at that. I'll be out of town for a while..... not off to great adventures in other continents.... but to the great upstate (in order to cure what I'm now realizing is chronic nostalgia) hitting some golf balls, hiking some trails, and jamming to great Irish folk music.
BO'C
